A Special Day with ThriveWell Dudes

As a photographer and service provider, I like to give back throughout the year. When I partnered with ThriveWell Cancer Foundation here in San Antonio, Texas, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect—especially from the men. I met Joseé, ThriveWell’s Program Director, at a local networking event and we immediately connected over the power of using our work to serve others. Together, we came up with a plan to offer portrait sessions to some of their participants, including a group of five women (if you haven’t seen the Divas’ stories yet, click here!) and men affectionately referred to as the “Dudes.” These were survivors, fighters, and real-deal everyday heroes—but all I knew were their names. I hadn’t spoken to them before the photoshoot. I knew a little bit about their stories from their questionnaire, but not their ages, or personalities. To be honest, I was a little nervous that none of the guys would sign up.

To my surprise (and delight), all five spots filled immediately when asked. They showed up for their session at my downtown San Antonio photo studio with open minds and maybe a little curiosity. All of them said they had never had a photoshoot before, and were eager and open. I could sense they weren’t totally sure what the day would bring, but as soon as they stepped into my welcoming studio space, the nerves began to melt away. That initial reaction—their eyes lighting up at the space—was the perfect icebreaker. Soon enough, music was playing, jokes were flying and I had five new friends on my hands. My makeup artist, Irene O’Brien was present giving her time, creating a welcoming and fun environment and making sure everyone’s skin looked amazing on camera. This was part of the experience the guys enjoyed as well! One of them even said, “I didn’t think I’d laugh and smile this much today.” And that? That’s exactly why I wanted them to experience this. This day was meant for them to let loose, enjoy the moment, and capture that joy and strength they live every single day.

These weren’t just pictures. These were powerful, soulful portrait sessions honoring each man’s unique story and strength. Two of the men brought their partners along—amazing humans who had supported them through their journey with cancer and stood by them still. It was a beautiful reminder that healing doesn’t happen alone. One moment that will stay with me forever? Salsa music started playing, and at one point, we were dancing, laughing, and creating joyful moments that radiated through the camera lens. This was more than a typical day at a San Antonio photography studio—this was a celebration of life, love, and resilience.

In the beginning, it felt good knowing I was giving back to the community in my own small way. But by the end of this experience, I realized they had given me something even more meaningful—hope. These portrait sessions weren’t just about photos; they were about human connection. As a photographer who values authenticity, joy, and purpose-driven work, I’d love to welcome you to my Downtown San Antonio portrait studio. Whether you’re planning a personal branding shoot, glamour portraits, or want to celebrate a milestone in your life, I’ll help you create photos that feel true to you and celebrate your journey. I believe you are inherently worthy today, to be photographed.

ALAN’S STORY:

This shoot is more than just pictures, it’s a snapshot of my story, my strength, and my legacy in the making.

When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, it was a life-changing moment, one that tested not only my physical strength but also my mindset and resilience. Navigating treatments, managing the emotional toll, and balancing everyday responsibilities became a constant challenge.

ThriveWell became a crucial part of my journey. Through their programs and support, I found both encouragement and community. ThriveWell’s focus wasn’t just on treatment, it was about helping me maintain hope, wellness, and quality of life. They offered resources that made a real difference, from fitness and nutrition programs to emotional support groups.

Working with ThriveWell reminded me that battling cancer isn’t something you do alone. It showed me the power of community-driven care, positivity, and staying mentally strong. Thanks to their support and my own determination, I was able to move forward with strength and gratitude, not just surviving, but thriving.

Q: Is there anything you’d tell your younger self?

A: Stay true to who you are, even when the world tries to tell you otherwise. Trust your instincts, protect your peace, and don’t waste time doubting your worth. Every setback is setting you up for something greater, be patient. Focus on building real character, not just chasing approval. Love boldly, forgive quickly, and always choose growth over comfort. And remember, you are stronger than you realize.

Q: If there were words of wisdom you’d share with the world, what would they be?

A: Never underestimate the power of perseverance, kindness, and faith. Life will test you, not to break you, but to build you into the person you’re meant to become. Protect your mind, cherish your loved ones, and lead with integrity, even when no one is watching. This is for anyone who feels like giving up, anyone fighting battles in silence, and anyone trying to find their place in a world that sometimes feels overwhelming. Especially for the younger generation, a reminder that strength isn’t about being perfect; it’s about staying grounded in who you are through every season of life.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote, prayer or mantra?

A: God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers. This speaks to your resilience, your faith, and your ability to endure life’s hardships while staying grounded, loving, and hopeful. It reflects strength through adversity.

COLSTON’S STORY:

It has been a long journey honestly, from being diagnosed back in 2022 to having my bone marrow transplant in 2023, and getting back in remission. If I didn’t have God, my wife and family and loved ones by my side, I don’t know how I would have made it. Being with ThriveWell and building this community with all these wonderful survivors, it has been a blessing because to be surrounded by a new family has been amazing. I love everyone at ThriveWell.

I have an amazing wife that I wouldn’t have been able to make it through without. I  want to thank her for everything that she has done for me on this journey; she has truly been the best part of all of this.

Q: Is there anything you’d tell your younger self?

A: Keep God first in all things and make sure you use and learn the gifts that He has instilled in You. Even in the places where you may struggle, learn what true prayer is early on to have a deep relationship with God and let Him guide you.

Q:

A: Never be so arrogant to think that you can do life without God in the center and that would be for anybody honestly

Q: Do you have a favorite quote, prayer or mantra?

A: Keep God first in all you do. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.

I’m glad that I have an advocate with my journey and this newfound battle with my kidney cancer. I am also battling multiple sclerosis, and is a life change of a whole field of unknown. Thrive well is an important organization that helped in a dark place and time in all of our lives.

JOHN’S STORY:

I had my first portrait session when I was a naked baby for the prettiest baby contest. I can’t believe I lost that! My Cancer journey includes several squamous cell carcinomas requiring Mohs surgery and radiation treatment. My favorite thing about myself is my appreciation for life and my optimistic attitude.

Q: Is there anything you’d tell your younger self?

A: Study Harder!

Q: If there were words of wisdom you’d share with the world, what would they be and who would they be for?

A: Hang tough when life throws you a curveball. This is for anyone that encounters hardships along the way in life.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote, prayer or mantra?

A: I’ve tried to live by the mantra my father said to me. “Enjoy the popsicle today rather than save the nickel for tomorrow.” And I have encouraged my own children to grab every opportunity when it comes their way, and to enjoy life daily.
