A San Antonio Mother-Daughter Session with a Disney Twist

There’s a particular kind of joy that shows up in a session when a mom brings her whole self to it — not just as a parent, but as an artist, a veteran, a business owner, and a little girl’s favorite dance partner. That’s exactly what happened when Bonnie drove in from Austin with her daughter, Bronwyn, for what started as a simple portrait session and turned into one of my favorite hybrid shoots to date.

How the Session Came Together

Bonnie called to book a mother-daughter portrait session, but as we talked, I learned there was so much more to her story. She’s a fellow veteran, and it showed in the way she carried herself and the way she talks about helping others — it’s clearly part of who she is. She’s also an artist, selling her original artwork online, and she needed brand photos to help her website feel as personal and vibrant as her work.

So instead of treating these as two separate sessions, we combined them. Bonnie got her personal mother-daughter portraits, wanted to be a part of my 40 and over series, “Becoming” and the brand photography she needed for her art business, all in one afternoon. Then I took it a step further: we wove Bronwyn into some of the brand photos too, so the images felt less like generic “business headshots” and more like a true reflection of the woman and the family behind the artwork. For women running a business alongside raising a family, that overlap between “who I am at work” and “who I am at home” isn’t a compromise — it’s the whole story, and I love when portraits can actually show that.

Bronwyn Stole the Show

If you ask Bronwyn what her favorite things are, you’ll get an immediate answer: Disney, dresses, and tiaras, in that order. We leaned into all of it. My makeup artist added just a touch of blush and lip gloss so she’d feel extra pretty, and once the Disney songs started playing, any hint of shyness disappeared. She twirled, she sang along, and at one point Bonnie scooped her up and spun her around while the two of them laughed so hard we all started laughing together.

Those are the moments I’m always looking to create in a session — not the posed, stiff smiles, but the real, unscripted joy between a mother and daughter who are just having fun together. It’s the kind of connection that doesn’t need direction, only a little direction and the right song.

Creating a Keepsake for Generations

Bonnie also wanted to build a keepsake album, and this session gave us exactly the material for it. Between the tender mother-daughter portraits, the playful Disney-inspired moments, and the elevated brand images featuring her artwork, we captured a full range of who she is right now — as a mom, an artist, and a woman building something of her own. It’s the kind of album that doesn’t just sit on a shelf. It’s meant to be opened again and again, and one day handed down to Bronwyn as a piece of her own history.

Why I Love Sessions Like This

I get to work with a lot of incredible women through my San Antonio studio, and clients like Bonnie remind me why hybrid sessions matter so much for women who are building a business, raising a family, and figuring out how those pieces fit together — often for the first time later in life, after a career, a move, or a new chapter entirely.
